New Global Pharmaceutical Outsourcing Trends

Pharmaceutical Online | By Jim Zhang, Ph.D.

It has been widely recognized that the global pharmaceutical industry is currently experiencing dynamic change. Under high pressure to contain fixed costs, all drug companies are currently reducing their internal capacities in R&D, manufacturing, and even marketing and, instead, increasing their outsourcing. To a large extent, the drug companies, large or small, now rely on outsourcing service providers more than ever to fulfill their tasks, solve their problems, and improve their efficiency and productivity.

Outsourcing Demands

In recent years, many major pharma companies have remodeled their traditional drug R&D operations. They now focus on de-risking their R&D efforts via external, outsourced resources. Meanwhile, the global competitive environment also has forced them to constantly streamline manufacturing operations, leading to an increased demand for contract manufacturing of marketed drugs, especially small molecule generic drugs (e.g. intermediates, APIs, finished products).

Drug Makers Replace Reps With Digital Tools

The Wall Street Journal | By Jeanne Whalen

Big pharmaceutical companies have found replacements for the army of sales representatives they've laid off in recent years: digital sales tools that seek to sell doctors on drugs without the intrusion of an office visit.

Tens of thousands of pharmaceutical sales reps have been eliminated in the U.S., creating a void that drug makers are now increasingly filling with websites, iPad apps and other digital tools to interact with doctors who prescribe their treatments.

Doctors can use the tools to ask questions about drugs, order free samples and find out which insurers cover certain treatments. Sometimes drug-company representatives will engage them in live chat, or phone them back if they have more questions. The changes are designed to cut costs and to reach doctors in ways other than the traditional office visit, which many busy physicians say they find intrusive and annoying. In 2009, one of every five doctors in the U.S. was what the industry calls a "no see," meaning the doctor wouldn't meet with reps.

More physicians tap into social media to engage patients

With nearly one-third of consumers using social media for their health, mediums such as FaceBook and YouTube provide a great opportunity for practices to engage patients.

According to a recent PwC Health Research Institute report 32% of survey respondents reported using social media channels for healthcare purposes, such as connecting with health organizations and other people with shared health interests. Consumers across all age groups used the following channels for healthcare purposes.

•    32 percent - any social media
•    18 percent - Facebook
•    12 percent - YouTube
•    9 percent - blogs
•    8 percent - Google+
•    6 percent - Twitter
•    2 percent – foursquare
(respondents could select more than one option)

"Healthcare organizations are experimenting with building stronger connections and communities through social media, and the trend is expected to grow in 2012 as social media becomes part of an organization's overall strategy to improve healthcare and outcomes," stated a PwC press release.

Study: Most Online Diabetes Management Tools Ineffective

Most Web-based tools for diabetes management are ineffective, according to a study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, CMIO reports.
Methodology

For the study, researchers from Toronto-based St. Michael's Hospital and the University of Toronto identified Web-accessible tools by searching the medical literature databases CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE and Medline. Researchers used the following search words:

  • Computer-based;
  • Diabetes;
  • Hypertension;
  • Internet;
  • Online;
  • Smoking cessation; and
  • Weight reduction.
Researchers also selected the first 30 results for certain preselected phrases searched in Google.
The researchers identified 92 Web tools and 57 associated studies. They graded each tool's clinical usefulness and sustainability using a scale of zero to five, and they used a set of 27 criteria to measure usability.

Key Findings

The researchers determined that:

  • 60% of the tools had at least three usability errors;
  • 25% of the tools provided easily accessible and clinically useful answers most of the time; and
  • 6% had no usability errors.
The researchers also noted high rates of inconsistent use of the tools, which could limit the tools' value. Based on the findings, the researchers recommended that future research determine ways to reduce inconsistent use of such tools and to standardize website quality indicators (Gale, CMIO, 1/12).

Eight technologies for a healthier 2012

The Washington Post |  By  Vivek Wadhwa

Welcome to 2012 and a new list of New Year’s resolutions — a list that likely includes some variation on adopting a healthier lifestyle. Thanks to the acceleration of technology, fulfilling your resolutions this time around may be easier than it was in 2011.

The combination of diet, exercise and sleep, are keys to good health. Kraft, a physician-scientist who chairs the medicine track and runs the FutureMed program at Singularity University, believes that we can end the obesity epidemic and reduce the incidence of “non-communicable” diseases (such as heart disease) through technology. Kraft put together an assessment of the technologies available today that can help you fulfill your New Year’s resolutions for good health.

AstraZeneca looks for new partners to bolster pipeline

AstraZeneca has used a recent healthcare conference in San Francisco to call for new drug development partners. Speaking at the event, hosted by JP Morgan, AZ’s chief financial officer Simon Lowth said: “Partnering is a long-term commitment which is embedded in our organisation.” Chief executive David Brennan has already pledged that partnering “will be a way of life going forward,” as the company makes its pipeline ‘the number one priority’.

AstraZeneca said at the meeting that its areas of interest range from COPD to psychiatry and diagnostics to diabetes. The company would also like to be involved in late-stage opportunities in hearing disorders, critical care, hepatology, women’s health, and wound healing. “We add value to our partners’ products,” Lowth said, citing examples of those products that have made it to market in the past couple of years.

Nestle 'making bid for Pfizer baby formula unit'

Nestle is among the companies that could be involved in the bidding for Pfizer's baby formula business unit, according to a report.

Unnamed industry sources with knowledge of the matter have told Bloomberg that the consumer products company has made a first-round bid for the asset, as has Danone.

Nestle is thought to have greater resources in terms of cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments than Danone, which would position it well to win any potential race to acquire the infant nutrition business.

Adverse events mentions rare in social media, says study

A study of 224 pharmaceutical brands across several social media sites found that less than 1% of posts mentioned adverse events.

The study, by Bellevue, WA-based social media monitoring shop Visible Technologies, found that a mere .3% of the 257,000 posts mentioning those pharma brands over a 30-day period included adverse events reports. Fewer still met the federal reporting requirements for adverse events reports, as most posters remained anonymous and did not provide contact details. Just 14% of those posts mentioning adverse events would have triggered reporting requirements for pharma marketers, including an identifiable name and contact method.
