Pharmaceutical Industry at a Cross Roads

The Epoch Times | Heide B. Malhotra

The pharmaceutical (pharma) industry, once a thriving sector, has been cutting costs right and left by closing plants, laying off people, outsourcing jobs to third-world countries, and reducing research efforts to the minimum. “The good old days of the pharmaceutical industry are gone forever. Even an improved global economic climate is unlikely to halt efforts by the developed world’s governments to contain spending on drugs,” according to a December McKinsey Quarterly report, a business journal published by McKinsey & Company.

Despite a strong third quarter financial performance, Novartis International AG, a Swiss-based pharmaceutical giant, announced that it is closing down three of its subsidiaries, resulting in the layoff of 2,000 people. About 35 percent of the jobs will be outsourced to China and India, according to a conference call.

European pharma industry calls for 'robust' HTA framework

European healthcare organisations have called for a ‘robust and transparent framework’ for Health Technology Assessment (HTA) to allow the industry to manage its resources more effectively. This will encourage the development of new and innovative technologies for the benefit of patients and society, they say.

The call is featured in a joint paper produced by organisations including the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA), the European Generic Medicines Association (EGA) and the European Association for Bioindustries (EuropaBio).

Bayer HealthCare has highlighted its progress in the development of four new drugs with potential blockbuster sales capabilities.

Thanks to advancements achieved in its pipeline over the last year, the company has been able to secure European regulatory approval for its thrombosis drug Xarelto, while reporting positive advanced clinical trial data for the ophthalmology treatment VEGF Trap-Eye.

Important clinical data has also been published pertaining to Alpharadin and regorafenib, two new oncology agents, with all four of these therapies now scheduled for release within the next 18 months.

Pfizer has published positive phase III clinical trial data from a new study of Lyrica for patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS).

The treatment was compared to placebo and an alternative drug therapy in a study called A0081186, which involved more than 700 patients and took place over 12 months.

It was found that Lyrica was able to deliver a statistically significant improvement in terms of treatment response, reduction of RLS symptom severity and minimising the rate of augmentation, thus meeting all three of its co-primary endpoints.

Previous top-line phase III study data has also indicated that Lyrica can provide improved sleep maintenance compared with placebo among adults with RLS.

Sanofi has published data from an extensive meta-analysis of its diabetes therapy Lantus in order to reinforce the strong safety profile of the drug.

Presented at the World Diabetes Congress in Dubai, the new study has indicated there is no relationship between the use of Lantus and an increased cancer risk, following an assessment of various different insulins.

The research drew data from observational studies derived from databases plus randomised, controlled clinical trials and a case-control study in numerous countries, including England, Scotland, Sweden, Germany and Taiwan.

Lilly has been named as one of the top companies in the world in terms of corporate leadership

Lilly has been named as one of the top companies in the world in terms of corporate leadership in a new report from consultancy group Aon Hewitt.

The pharmaceutical company was ranked 16th on the global 25 list and 12th on the North American list, winning praise for its high standard of talent management and leadership practices.

According to the firm, Lilly's strong performance in this survey is based on robust internal policies, such as its commitment to succession planning, its numerous training opportunities and its frequent recruitment of non-US business leaders.

Steve Fry, senior vice-president of human resources and diversity, said Lilly considers it vital to have a strong supply of talent in place and to cultivate potential new leaders.

"Just as we work diligently to advance our drug pipeline, we need to do the same for our people pipeline. We are constantly working to identify and develop leaders," he added.
