Study reveals doc detail preferences: Hang up the phone

Although doors are increasingly closing on reps, data from CMI/Compas show a number of contradictions among healthcare practitioners and just what they want when it comes to pharma industry communications.

As an example: 85% of surveyed endocrinologists, 84% of neurologists and 86% of urologists told the marketing group that they prefer in-person detailing to alternates, like e-details, web conference and phone calls. But when CMI asked its 2,173 specialists from categories like hard-to-reach oncologists, general practitioners, pediatricians and psychiatrists, their overall message was that specialists want to see reps, just as long as the in-person chat takes five minutes or less to provide information and get out.
This short window spanned pretty much every category of rep contact. Eighty-five percent of HCPs polled said the ideal “visit” was five minutes or less, with many favoring the five-minute web conference (43%), e-detail (79%) and in-person visit (50%).

Changing Trends in Global Pharmacy workforce

 INTRODUCTION

Increased demand for health services and increasing expectations to service delivery have a significant effect in shaping work dynamics.Contemporary issues surrounding the global pharmacy workforce identified from the literature's include the importance of working conditions and job satisfaction, wide range of supply and demand factors affecting the workforce and migrations. To support growth in the establishment of pharmacy practice and its aspiration for increased patient focused care, work force needs another trends will need to be factored into pharmaceutical service development plans.

Global Policy Context

The world’s health workforce is facing significant challenges with a shortage of more than FOUR million health workers worldwide. The global health workers crisis is possibly the greatest health system constraint on countries seeking to meet their 2015 millennium development goals (MDGs). Increased demand for health services and increasing expectations for service delivery has changed the health workforce issues have generated huge interest and international action to bring about change. -World health report 2006

Serious side-effects warnings can increase drug sales: Study

 PharmaTimes| September 24, 2013

Warnings of serious side effects in drug advertising can actually improve consumers’ opinions and increase sales, rather than frightening them away, new research finds.

Ads may include warnings of side effects ranging from nausea and bleeding to blindness and even death, but they can improve consumers’ opinions about the product when there is a delay between them seeing the ad and deciding to buy or consume the product, say the researchers, reporting their findings in the Association for Psychological Science journal Psychological Science.

Novartis board to shrink executive pay, director says

Novartis board member Pierre Landolt let a couple of things slip in an interview with the Basler Zeitung published over the weekend. The first is a bit of a head-scratcher: Landolt would like the new chairman of Novartis and Roche  to get together for some exploratory merger talk.

The second: Pay cuts are coming for some top Novartis executives.
According to Landolt, Novartis' board is working on a new compensation plan that hews closely to shareholder value. It will be designed to be easily understood, and "it will lead to significant reductions," Landolt told the newspaper in a Q&A.

Who are the richest biopharma execs? Not all the usual suspects

FiercePharma | Tracy Staton

According to Genetic Engineering & Biotechology News, leading biotech executives dominate the ranks of best-capitalized managers. Gilead Sciences ($GILD) CEO John Martin, Celgene ($CELG) chief Robert Hugin, Alexion ($ALXN) CEO Leonard Bell and Vertex Pharmaceuticals ($VRTX) founder Joshua Boger all sit in the 9-figure range. In fact, only a few Big Pharma chieftains made the top 40 list at all--and a few of the pharma entries could surprise you.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals executives Len Schleifer (CEO) and George Yancopoulos (CSO) topped the biopharma executive-pay rankings this year. Now, Regeneron's ($REGN) top brass sits at the top of a new list: biopharma executives with the richest store of shares in their own companies.

But let's start with the drugmakers among the Gene News top 10 (which also includes some life sciences suppliers and technology purveyors). Schleifer is the only billionaire, with $1.13 billion in Regeneron shares. His R&D chief, Yancopoulos, holds another $580 million. Regeneron Chairman Roy Vagelos, for his part, sports another $675 million in company stock. (Somewhat farther down the list is Regeneron SVP Neil Stahl, with $63 million in shares.)

Google enters healthcare in a big way

Google is launching Calico, a new company that will focus on health and aging in particular. The independent firm will be run by Arthur Levinson, former CEO of biotech pioneer Genentech, who will also be an investor. Levinson, who began his career as a scientist and has a Ph.D. in biochemistry, plans to remain in his current roles as the chairman of the board of directors for both Genentech and Apple, a position he took over after its co-founder Steve Jobs died in 2011. In other words, the company behind YouTube and Google+ is gearing up to seriously attempt to extend the human life span.  But it’s a monumental task that’s going to require a ton of money as well as people who understand how consumers view health.

According to Time “why would Google be able to get traction on aging when huge pharmaceutical companies haven’t?  Page himself doesn’t oversell his knowledge of the industry. “I don’t have as much personal expertise in the technology,” he admits. “I have some knowledge of it, just being in Silicon Valley.   Medicine is well on its way to becoming an information science: doctors and researchers are now able to harvest and mine massive quantities of data from patients. And Google is very, very good with large data sets. While the company is holding its cards about Calico close to the vest, expect it to use its core data-handling skills to shed new light on familiar age-related maladies. Sources close to the project suggest it will start small and focus entirely on researching new technologies. When will that lead to something Google might actually sell? It’s anybody’s guess.”

While some are viewing this venture with a lot of skepticism I believe the time is right to use technology to both improve healthcare and more importantly lower costs.  The mobile health market is all over the place but physicians seem to be happy using just a few apps to look up drug information.  However a majority of physicians start their search for health information via a search engine.  I have been calling for Google to develop a special search portal for credible health information.

For consumers the quest to get them to give up their unhealthy lifestyles is going to take a deep rooted effort both on and offline.  There isn’t one tactic that’s going to work to get Americans to give up their over consumption of sugar and saturated fat.  Still this is an exciting effort with a lot of opportunities.  I hope that Calico won’t launch a lot of beta products without doing some market research that leads to an in depth understanding of consumer health behavior.  It’s a challenge but let’s hope Google is in this for the long haul to change health.

From sales rep to business consultant

Healthcare systems arround the world are changing drastically as purse strings are tightened and patients gain greater voice. Pharma companies have taken this on board and are starting to align with their customers, with most moving sales teams into key account management roles or various KAM-type job titles. “But not that many companies are focusing on the skills required to talk to these customers,” says Gary Killington, managing director of PI Partnership.
